Notable journalist and media industry moves:

  • The Wall Street Journal: releases a number of changes to take effect on December 16. Naftali Bendavid, D.C. editor, to oversee health policy, law enforcement, and federal courts coverage. Michelle Hackman moves from politics reporter to health policy team. Stephanie Armour and Louise Radnofsky also move to this team. Aruna Viswanatha joins Devlin Barrett on the Justice Department beat. Aaron Zitner, national politics editor, and FDA reporter Thomas Burton will oversee Congressional coverage. Susan Benkelman, news editor, will lead new intersection of business and government beat; Ted Mann, Brody Mullins, Kate O’Keefe, John McKinnon, and William Mauldin will be on Benkelman’s new team. Jeanne Cummings, political editor, will lead Carol Lee, Peter Nicholas, Michael Bender, and Damian Paletta on the White House reporting team. Jon Hilsenrath, chief economics correspondent, to oversee global economics beat. Becky Bowers becomes deputy global economics editor. Mark Anderson moves from real-time deputy to deputy editor of the financial regulatory group. Janet Hook and Reid Epstein to cover Democratic Party beat. Laura Meckler to cover demographic changes and the immigration debate. Andrew LaVallee moves from Greater New York deputy bureau chief to deputy corporate bureau chief. Christina Binkley, style columnist, to leave in January but will continue contributing as a freelancer.
  • The Courier-Journal (Louisville, KY): Joel Christopher moves from Gannett VP to executive editor and VP of news. Christopher replaces Neil Budde, who leaves.
  • Politico: Josh Dawsey, Greater New York reporter for The Wall Street Journal, joins as White House correspondent.
  • Axios: Jonathan Swan, former reporter for The Hill, joins as national political correspondent focusing on Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress.
  • Working Mother: Meredith Bodgas, former executive editor of Bauer Xcel Media, replaces Jennifer Owens as editorial director. Owens leaves.
  • Bloomberg: Joe Nocera, former columnist for The New York Times, joins. He will work as a features writer for Bloomberg Businessweek and a columnist for Bloomberg View.
  • The Outline: Joshua Topolsky and Christine Werthman lead editorial coverage for new website covering power. Jeff lhaza, Fader contributor, and Laura June, staff writer for The Cut, join writing team.
  • The New York Times: Glenn Thrush, chief political correspondent for Politico, joins as White House reporter. Rachel Dry, op-ed staff editor, moves to section editor of the “Sunday Review”. John Markoff, technology reporter, retires.
  • TriMed Media Group: Michael Walter replaces Cheryl Proval as the editor of Radiology Business Journal and website, as Proval leaves.
  • Metro US: Aleksander Korab replaces Frank Burgos, who is leaving, as editor-in-chief.
  • The Washington Post: Anne Gearan moves from political correspondent to cover the State Department.
  • Fox News: John Roberts moves from politics reporter to chief White House correspondent.
  • The Weekly Standard: Stephen Hayes moves from senior writer to editor-in-chief; he replaces Bill Kristol, who becomes editor-at-large. Richard Starr moves from deputy editor to editor.
  • Women’s Health: Marina Khidekel, former deputy editor for Cosmopolitan, joins as senior deputy editor.
  • Community Health: Jason Maholy replaces Carole Sharwarko as editor-in-chief; Sharwarko becomes digital content strategist for marketing/PR firm TopFire Media. Lauren Styx replaces Beth Wang as associate editor; Wang leaves to become a reporter at Inside Health Policy.
  • Bay Area News Group: Leia Parker, former managing editor for Silicon Valley Business Journal, joins as assistant business editor helping manage business coverage for The Mercury News, East Bay Times, and other San Francisco Bay Area papers.
  • Shape: Cheryl Kramer Kaye, executive beauty director, leaves.
  • W: Jane Larkworthy, executive beauty director, leaves.
  • Spring St.: Jennifer Owens, editorial director for Working Mother, joins as editor of this newly launched website. The website is described as “The Happy Place for Smart Women”.
  • ProPublica: Andrew Revkin, former environmental reporter at The New York Times, joins as senior reporter on climate change.
  • People StyleWatch: Lisa Arbetter, editor-in-chief, leaves.
  • Global News: Tom Clark, chief political correspondent, to leave January 1.
  • National Post: David Berry, associate features editor, leaves after six years.
  • 98.1 CHFI: Erin Davis, co-host of morning show, retires from CHIF after 28 years.
  • Motherboard: Farnia Fekri to intern at Motherboard Canada.
  • CBC Windsor: Dan Taekema, general assignment writer, leaves the Windsor Star to join CBC Windsor’s digital team.
  • Maisonneuve Magazine: Andrea Bennett, former associate editor, moves to editor-in-chief, replacing Daniel Viola, who is stepping down. Kim Fu joins as associate editor, while Monika Waber joins as art director.
  • Toronto Star: Vanessa Lu, business reporter, leaves after 21 years.
  • Daily Gleaner: Andrew Waugh, formerly with the Toronto Star, joins as editor.
  • Canadian Press: Malcolm McNeil to retire in January after 32 years.
  • BuzzFeed Canada: Craig Silverman becomes media editor.
  • Toronto Sun: Don Peat, city hall bureau chief, leaves to work for City of Toronto’s mayoral office.
  • The Globe and Mail: Ann Hui, national food reporter, takes a three-month leave to write a book.
