News and Media

Associated Press: promotes Alex Sanz (@AlexSanz) to Deputy Director of Newsgathering for the southern U.S. He works from the Atlanta bureau.

Canadian Press: hires Sunny Freeman (@SunnyFreeman) as Business Editor, replacing Jeffrey Hodgson, who left.

Dallas Morning News: VP and Editorial Page Editor Keven Ann Willey (@ka_willey) will retire at the end of the year.

Denver Post: moves Joe Rubino (@rubinojc) to the “Now” team. He will cover consumer-oriented business topics, including consumer finance, retail business and Denver-headquartered restaurants, including Chipotle. He previously covered Arapahoe and Douglas counties.

Emerson Collective: a non-profit controlled by Laurene Powell Jobs, has acquired majority ownership of The Atlantic from Atlantic Media. Emerson Collective will eventually acquire the remaining ownership stake. Emerson Managing Director Peter Lattman will become Vice-Chair of the magazine. The deal does not include Atlantic Media’s National Journal, Quartz or Government Executive.

News Tribune: promotes Dale Phelps (@dalephelps) to Editor and VP of News, replacing Karen Peterson who has left. He had been interim editor.

New York Times: hires Vox Media executive director Choire Sicha (@Choire) as Styles Section Editor, replacing Stuart Emmrich, who left. Investigative reporter James Risen has also left.

Pittburgh Magazine: hires former Pittsburgh Post-Gazette business editor Brian Hyslop (@BrianRHyslop) as Editor, effective Aug. 6. He replaces Cindi Lash, who left.

Reuters: promotes Corinne Perkins (@corinne_perkins) to North America editor for Reuters Pictures, effective Sept. 1. She will move from Toronto to New York.

State, The: Executive Editor Mark E. Lett has retired.

Wall Street Journal: promotes Karen Miller Pensiero (@KMPensiero) to Managing Editor overseeing newsroom operations, including the budget and recruitment of newsroom personnel. She replaces Christine Glancey, who will move to a new role that’s yet to be announced.

Broadcasting

CNBC: hires Contessa Brewer (@contessabrewer) as a General Assignment Reporter. Reporter Susan Li has left.

CNBC Digital: hires Shawn M. Carter as a Writer for the “Make It” section. He will focus on money topics. Nathan Skid (@NateSkid) joins as a Senior producer for the Make It video team. Magdalena Petrova joins as an Associate Video Producer for the technology team.

Business and Commerce

Advantage Business Media: promotes Jon Minnick to Editorial Content Director for the Manufacturing Group. His responsibilities include oversight of Pharmaceutical Processing and Surgical Products. However, pitches for those publications should go to the editors: Meg Snyder for Pharmaceutical Processing and Dan Seeger for Surgical Products.

Kiplinger’s Personal Finance: has appointed Eileen Ambrose (@eileenambrose) as Senior Editor. She will oversee retirement coverage. Sandra Block (@sandyblock) is now Senior Editor overseeing the “Ahead” section.

Portland Business Journal: hires Clare Duffy (@claresduffy) as a Reporter covering the sportswear industry as well as banking as general assignments. She replaces Matthew Kish, who is on a Knight-Bagehot journalism fellowship for the next academic year. Her beat includes Nike, Adidas, Columbia Sportswear and other apparel makers with major operations in the area.

Consumer Lifestyle

Parents: has launched a redesign, effective with the September issue. New sections include “Let’s Get Real,” featuring accounts from real mothers, and “You’re Welcome,” covering “solutions and swag that comes across our editors’ desks.” The new design also expands the “Home” section from two to five pages per issue. Health and safety remain major areas of coverage. It hits the newsstands on Aug. 8. Senior Editor Julia Edelstein (@JuliaEdelstein) and Associate Editor Aleksandra Mencel (@amencel) oversee health coverage.

Healthcare and Medicine

Modern Healthcare: hires Paul Barr (@PGBarr) as Features Editor. Maria Castellucci (@CastellucciME) is now covering quality and safety, replacing Elizabeth Whitman (@elizabethwhitty), who left and is now freelancing.

Politics, Government and Education

New Republic: promotes Sarah Jones (@onesarahjones) to Staff Writer. Eric Armstrong (@_ericarmstrong) replaces her as Social Media Editor.

Technology and Telecoms

Gizmodo Media Group: appoints Susie Banikarim (@banikarim) as Editorial Director, effective Sept. 5. She replaces Katie Drummond (@katiedrumm), who became Executive Editor of The Outline. Banikarim will oversee Gizmodo as well as sister sites Deadspin, Jalopnik, Jezebel, Kotaku, Lifehacker, Splinter and The Root. Fusion, the digital publication from Gizmodo Media Group, relaunches as Splinter (http://splinternews.com). Coverage will focus on news and politics. Staffers include Editor-in-Chief Dodai Stewart (@dodaistewart), Features Editor Nona Willis Aronowitz (@nona) and News Editors Jack Mirkinson (@jackmirkinson) and Katherine Krueger (@kath_krueger). Staffers are now using splinternews.com email domains. Fusion.net is now devoted to the Fusion television channel.

VentureBeat: editor-in-chief Blaise Zerega (@BeeZee) has left.
