Boutique PR agency offers 3 tips to help small biz weather the looming recession

by | Mar 23, 2020 | Analysis, Covid-19, Public Relations

COVID-19 has quickly spread throughout the world and become the most significant threat imaginable to employers, including the nearly 30 million small businesses in the United States. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is safe to assume all 30 million now have a growing concern of the economic disruptions to come. After all, it is a new era and unchartered territory for many.

Ultimately, the goal of small businesses, including our media and PR agency, is to maintain profitability. In a time of crisis and financial uncertainty—how can our actions have a far-reaching, positive impact on the businesses we touch? How do we move forward, make a real difference, and survive financially?

At MSSmedia, our mantra is “creating a sincere difference,” and we employ this in the way we value our team and our clients, despite events that unexpectedly come our way. Understanding the devastating impact this pandemic is having on businesses, we have adopted a practice of advocacy, providing our clients—mainly our community of small businesses facing immediate struggles—with insight and resources available to them.

Street sign that reads Small Business Owner

Below we have outlined advice we are sharing with them—and now with you. The goals are to continue moving forward, creating a sincere difference, and building on the American dream.

Move forward: Apply for a U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) loan

SBA helps small businesses—and boutique media and PR agencies, such as ours—navigate the economic recovery process from the effects of COVID-19. On Monday, March 17, Florida Governor Rob DeSantis activated the Florida Small Business Emergency Bridge Loan Program, which will provide short-term, interest-free loans to small businesses that are demonstrating economic impacts as a result of COVID-19. The Florida application period runs until May 8, 2020.

However, it’s essential to check what programs are available in your state. Apply if eligible, and share with your small business clients, who may be unaware that federal disaster loans exist—and, if they are aware, they may be unsure of how to go about applying for them.

Create a sincere difference: Have compassion and understanding

In unprecedented times like these, offer pro-bono support to your clients. In other words, go above and beyond agreed-upon expectations. At MSSmedia, we are committed to the ongoing success of our clients and have taken it upon ourselves to offer our clients an additional extension of our PR services, such as Crisis Management to mitigate what is occurring with COVID-19. For example, we have written and copy-edited their newsletters and social media announcements, at the same time aligning them with appropriate editorial coverage during this time.

Finally, in working with our clients, we remind ourselves now and always to think positively. As a small team and in keeping safe, we are self-monitoring but still have been able to safely collaborate with each other. This includes using the Slack channel to share real-time insights across our agency, with the end-goal of being trusted advisors to our clients, especially those that are small businesses and need support from their partners, now more than ever.

Embody the American Dream: Maintain a futuristic view

It’s essential to have a futuristic view during any time of economic crisis as opposed to defaulting to selfish measures. For instance, being familiar with the small business landscape and aware of available resources, from disaster loans to business counseling, can help save them from demoting and/or laying off employees. In choosing to have a futuristic mindset, we’re providing our clients with the wherewithal to continue business as best as possible.

Specific to MSSmedia, as a small business and in working with clients that generate similar revenue, we can align our revenue goals and holistically share how to remain prosperous and successful. It was said best by Benjamin Franklin, “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.”
