Katherine Mackinnon, a prominent strategic communications and advocacy expert, joined APCO Worldwide, announced Tim Smith, managing director, Seattle. Mackinnon has more than a decade of local government and public affairs experience and will serve as a director based in the firm’s Seattle office.
“Making an impact on a local level has never been more important for companies and organizations in today’s challenging advocacy landscape,” said Smith. “Katherine’s strong public affairs and Seattle government background coupled with her experience developing impactful strategic communications campaigns in the market, strengthens our ability to provide innovative solutions for our clients. We are delighted to welcome Katherine to APCO and our growing West Coast team.”
Prior to joining APCO, Mackinnon served as an account supervisor and director for Nyhus Communications, where she specialized in reputation management, advocacy, strategic communications and public affairs for a wide range of clients across the technology and real estate sectors.
Mackinnon previously served as a policy and advocacy specialist for the Downtown Seattle Association, where she built coalitions and led campaigns focused on improving public safety and enhancing infrastructure investments in the city. She also worked for two Seattle city council members on issues related to transportation, land use and budget policy.
“APCO’s reputation and unique combination of local expertise within a globally connected company sets the firm apart,” said Mackinnon. “I’m very excited to join APCO’s dynamic team and look forward to partnering with clients to develop bold strategies and position them for success.”
Mackinnon’s addition comes during a banner year for APCO Worldwide, as 2019 represents the 35th anniversary year of its founding. Founded by Margery Kraus as a single-person operation in 1984, APCO has grown to a global advisory and advocacy communications consultancy with nearly 800 employees in more than 30 offices worldwide.
