LOS ANGELES, CA — June 26, 2025 — Today, the advocacy agency RALLY launched its new podcast, “What If We?,” available on Apple and Spotify. Ten years after the agency played a pivotal role in the fight for national marriage equality, its podcast will take listeners behind the scenes of the campaigns and communications practices that shape culture, drive policy, and expand what’s possible in the world of social change.
In its debut episode, “What If We?” brings together two major figures from the historic battle for marriage equality: Kris Perry, the plaintiff in the case against California’s Prop 8, and Felix Schein, President of RALLY and part of the communications campaign that paved the way for the Supreme Court’s decision to recognize marriage equality.
“The goal of ‘What If We?’ is to push us all to think a little bit differently and more creatively about how we solve the pressing challenges we face. If we approach the work in the same way we always have — we’ll get the same results. ‘What If We?’ provides a platform to have the tough, interesting, and thought-provoking conversations about how we do things differently and make progress a little faster,” said RALLY Principal and host Kaitlin Funaro. A former producer for the BBC and LAist, Funaro leads the conversation on how communications and cultural momentum created a playbook that’s still relevant today.
Perry, alongside her wife Sandy, stood at the forefront of the legal fight that restored marriage equality in California—a critical stepping stone on the path to national equality. Schein worked behind the scenes to orchestrate a communications strategy that not only secured victory in California, but also shifted public opinion by more than 25%, paving the way for the landmark 2015 Supreme Court decision that recognized full marriage equality nationwide.
“It was a fight that lasted five years. It was really, really slow,” said Perry. “We weren’t asking for more, we were just asking for fairness. Being ‘less than’ has really negative impacts on people and communities.”
The campaign remains one of the most cited and discussed social advocacy campaigns of the past decade.
“There had been… decades of work to change the culture, the perception of the LGBTQ+ community… that this wasn’t just a question of rights in a legal context, but really a question of love,” said Schein.
Each episode of “What If We?” will feature candid conversations with the architects of major cultural and policy shifts, offering listeners rare insight into the moments and movements that define our times.
