WEILL appointed PR Counsel to Setouchi Cominca Stays in Japan

by | Oct 19, 2020

Geoffrey Weill Associates (WEILL) has been appointed PR counsel to Setouchi Cominca Stays, a unique collection of hundreds-year-old traditional Japanese homes that have been renovated and newly opened as exclusive-use home rentals for travelers.

Designated as Japan’s first national park, the Setouchi region of western Japan is known for its natural beauty, pristine mountain ranges and the famed Seto Inland Sea, dotted with more than 700 remote islands. Nestled within this lushly forested region are a series of historic cultural properties that have been meticulously restored and opened as Setouchi Cominca Stays.

Located in the small, remote rural towns of Shobara and Uchiko, Setouchi Cominca Stays is comprised of four traditional Japanese homes originally built between 100 and 300 years ago (cominca translates as “old house”), which now combine authentic Japanese architectural features (wood-timbered roofs and engawa, wooden porch-like corridors bordering the rooms of the cominca) and modern conveniences and 21st-century comforts.

And as part of the related Setouchi Comachi Project, a sustainable tourism initiative aimed at preserving cultural heritage and creating jobs in this underpopulated rural region, there are plans to renovate more than 100 more traditional Japanese cominca homes throughout the region for tourist rental.

“We are delighted to add Setouchi Cominca Stays to our portfolio of clients, which already includes the Japan National Tourism Organization and Visit Miyagi, allowing us to further shine a light on the unique cultural and architectural heritage of this incredible destination,” says Mark Liebermann, WEILL’s Senior Vice President. “And with travelers increasingly focused on getting off the beaten path and seeking opportunities for regenerative travel, Setouchi Cominca Stays may prove the perfect escape.”
