How To Get Cited on Perplexity: What PR Teams Need to Know
By Osama Saeed | August 18, 2026

Most AI answer engines started as chatbots and added web search as a feature much later. Perplexity was built the other way around, combining a trained LLM with live web retrieval, citing its sources on every answer it returns. This structural difference sets Perplexity apart for PR teams seeking AI visibility, as it relies most heavily on citations among the four leading engines. As a result, it provides the quickest feedback loop, with web presence influencing visibility much more quickly than other AI chatbots.

However, the market share is relatively smaller. Agility’s ‘Closing the AI Visibility Gap‘ report surveyed 110+ PR and communications professionals who ranked Perplexity fourth on their list of AI engines they are prioritizing. Market share tells a similar story. Perplexity held 2% of the US generative AI chatbot market in July 2026, down from 5.3% in January, the smallest share of the four engines.

For PR teams, consumer share alone doesn’t tell the full story. Here is what that means in practice:

What our research revealed about Perplexity behaviour

We examined 6,120 prompts and their responses on Perplexity across 48 industry categories. Our research analyzes every brand named, every source cited, and the reasoning behind each recommendation. Here are the key insights:

It always answers with a source

Perplexity included at least one citation in 99.99% of answers, the highest rate in the study. Claude followed at 99.7%, Gemini at 99.3%, and ChatGPT at 94.5%. It averaged 7.7 citations per answer, second only to Claude’s 12.8, producing 47,221 citations across the prompt set.

There is a structural reason for that consistency. Modelled as an answer engine, Perplexity is designed to conduct live searches and draw on online data. Its own help centre confirms the company does not build foundation models, meaning it has no training data to draw on. Where ChatGPT might name brands from model memory, Perplexity must retrieve something online before synthesizing a response.

For PR teams, Perplexity offers a transparent platform to gauge AI visibility. While other models rely on training data, Perplexity’s responses derive from what it can find online. It also offers quick feedback for PR and comms pros, as changes to your web presence can instantly impact brand visibility here.

It is the most corporate-reliant AI platform

Corporate content accounts for 63% of Perplexity’s citations, the highest share of any engine we tested. That’s 10% more than second on the list, ChatGPT, which sits at 53.2%.

For some industries, it goes even higher. Corporate citations account for 73.2% of all sources in Healthcare, the highest corporate content weightage across our study. Entertainment (69.3%) and Education (65.9%) also take in approximately two-thirds of all citations from corporate content. Finance, where Perplexity has the lowest weightage of corporate content, still sources almost half (49.1%) of its citations from the category.

Our study defines corporate citations to include official material from the company (product pages, blogs, documentation, and FAQs), as well as official material from third-party organizations in the same industry (partner pages, directories, and competitors’ product pages).

That distinction matters. A majority of Perplexity’s corporate citations may be present on sites you do not own, which means a strong website alone will not cover the category. Brands need a mix of high-quality owned content and active presence on the third-party properties that Perplexity draws from, including directories, partner pages, and review sites.

Gaining AI visibility across Perplexity requires auditing brand reputation across the corporate web to see how your brand is being represented.

Industry benchmarking is what highlights opportunity

The averages help understand how an AI answer engine platform behaves, but they should only act as a starting point for strategy.

Perplexity’s citation share shifts sharply across the eight industries we analyzed, making industry benchmarking a prerequisite for an effective AI visibility strategy.

Industry Corporate Trade Review Major Independent
Healthcare 73.2% 9.5% 3.0% 1.5% 11.1%
Entertainment 69.3% 10.1% 3.7% 1.8% 10.4%
Education 65.9% 7.1% 4.1% 0.4 20.5%
Beauty and Hair Care 64.5% 3.5% 4.7% 5.2% 16.3%
Travel and Tourism 64.1% 4.6% 6.6% 1.9% 19.6%
Sports 59.2% 10.7% 6.5% 1.7% 13.9%
Telecommunications 51.7% 19.3% 8.7% 0.5% 14.8%
Finance 49.6% 20.7% 3.5% 5.6% 16.8%
Average 63% 10.9% 4.3% 1.4% 14%

The data reveals several interesting takeaways, all underscoring the importance of industry benchmarking. For instance, while a Healthcare PR team can focus solely on corporate content, a Finance brand has to factor in trade and independent content citations to drive visibility.

Similarly,  Trade sits at 20.7% in Finance and 19.3% in Telecommunications, against 3.5% in Beauty and Hair Care and 4.6% in Travel. In regulated and technically complex categories, specialist publications are a primary route into Perplexity’s answers. This is clearly not the case for consumer categories.

Independent third-party sources also drive influence, particularly in Education (20.5%),  Travel (19.6%), and Finance (16.8). This means nonbranded content such as podcasts, newsletters, YouTube, and independent blogs out-cite trade press in five of the eight industries in the study.

For PR teams, this is the argument for benchmarking your own sector rather than working based on platform averages. Perplexity’s overall profile may signal a Finance communications team to deprioritize trade press, even though trade is the second-largest citation source in their category. The averages describe the platform. Industry benchmarking is what highlights actionable opportunity.

Performance remains the principal recommendation factor

When analyzing brand mentions, performance drives 79.7% of Perplexity’s recommendations. This is in line with the rest of our research, with reputation contributing to 12.3% of brand recommendations as the second most valuable recommendation factor. The notable difference is price (4.5%), which records its strongest influence on Perplexity.

These insights align with the platform’s core function as an answer engine. When prompted, it bases its answer on the most specific and retrievable information available online, drawing on comparisons, results, case studies, and pricing pages to mention brands.

This also explains the high number of corporate content citations, as product information, pricing data, and industry roundups are examples of pages that document this kind of information.

Crawlability access is a prerequisite for getting cited

Much like a search engine platform, visibility on Perplexity is directly linked to the platform’s ability to crawl your content. Perplexity’s help centre states that PerplexityBot will not index the full or partial text content of any site that disallows it in robots.txt. It may still be able to index basic information, such as the domain, headline, and a summary.

However, a domain and a headline are not enough to serve as the evidence behind a recommendation. Given that 63% of Perplexity’s citations come from corporate web content, a brand whose own site is inaccessible has effectively removed itself from the largest citation category on the platform.

What this means for PR teams

Given its unique architecture, AI visibility on Perplexity requires a different approach compared to other AI answer engines. Here are the practical takeaways for PR teams prioritizing Perplexity:

  • Crawl access is the foundation. Ensure your site has the required robots.txt and firewall rules to allow for PerplexityBot to crawl your content. With the platform drawing nearly two-thirds of its citations from corporate content, a blocked site is invisible.
  • Treat your owned web presence as a citation asset. Perplexity relies heavily on industry content, both owned and third-party. Prioritize product pages, documentation, and FAQs, and ensure proper formatting (specific, current, and structured for extraction) to improve visibility.
  • Audit how industry pages describe you. PR teams need to monitor partner, directory, and competitor pages for mentions and portrayal accuracy. Corporate citations include third-party organizational content you do not own but can often influence. Inaccurate or outdated descriptions on those pages can lead to inaccurate positioning or framing in AI responses.
  • Focus on results. Performance is the top recommendation factor across all AI engines, but it has the highest weight on Perplexity. PR teams need to focus on measurable outcomes, client case studies, results, and pricing details when creating content for increased AI visibility on Perplexity.
  • Use Perplexity as your earliest signal. Without any training data to reference, it can reflect changes to your web presence faster than the other three engines, making it a useful tool to see whether a content or outreach change is working.

Since AI answer engines demonstrate distinctive citation and brand recommendation behaviours, PR teams need dedicated AI visibility measurement to track where their brand appears across platforms, identify which sources are driving citations, and direct outreach accordingly.
