The career path to CMO: 3 tips for becoming a marketing guru

by | Oct 12, 2018 | Marketing, Public Relations

If you have a talent and a passion for advertising and selling, then your career could be heading in the direction of becoming a chief marketing officer. But to do that, you’re going to have to become a bit of a marketing guru first.

If this is the path you want to venture down, then you’re going to have to devote a lot of time and a lot of effort, just like any other guru in any other area of life would have to. To get some insight into what you would have to do, make sure to read on:

Get the qualifications

To become a marketing guru and then ultimately a CMO, you’re going to need to gain a few essential qualifications, and this means going further than enrolling in a bachelor’s program and only obtaining an undergrad degree in marketing, too. You’re going to need an MBA degree if you want to stand out to the executives who have the power to make or break your career through their hiring decisions. Obtaining such degrees would teach you how to evaluate policies, develop forecasts, and track consumer behavior, and your first employers will see you having that kind of knowledge as being essential.

Find your niche

Preferably throughout your time in education, you will be working on what you deem to be your marketing niche. This is the subject area that impassions you the most—the one that makes you want to advertise and sell things.

Your niche could be online content marketing, for instance, or, even more specifically, it could be social media marketing. If this were to be your niche, choosing it and working on it early would see you gain the skills needed to make you proficient in it even before you land your first really big job in the field. What’s more, it would give you a direction to take in regards to the options that are made available to you, meaning you’d never find yourself wasting your time or your opportunities.

Learn how to read patterns

As a marketer, you need to be able to read patterns and trends in order to see what courses of action are best to take going forward. If you are unable to come to grips with such skills, and if you only ever look at the present day when it comes to marketing, you will never produce the advertising success that businesses are so desperately looking for.

A surprisingly effective technique when it comes to learning how to read patterns is to play poker. When you play this game, especially when you do so in a focused Unibet online casino setting, you teach yourself how to keep an eye on your competitors’ betting patterns to put yourself in better stead of coming out of the game with winnings. So, if you fancy setting yourself any extracurricular homework in your journey to becoming a marketing guru, let it be to play poker.

Chief marketing officers are of massive importance in the business world of today, and you can one day become one. First, you have to become a marketing guru!
