Notable journalist and media industry moves:

  • The New York Times: Micheal Slackman moves from international managing editor to international editor to replace Joe Kahn. International assistant editor Joseph Kahn promotes to managing editor.
  • Men’s Health: former senior VP of Time Inc. Matt Bean joins as editor.
  • Women’s Health: freelancer Michelle Stacey joins as features director, while Cathryne Keller promotes to senior associate.
  • The Hill: launches a new paid subscription service, “The Hill Extra: Healthcare”, to cover healthcare legislation and industry executive moves. Meghan Milkowski to oversee operations and David Eldridge from Roll Call joins healthcare editor. Lauren Clason (formerly of Atlantic Information Services and Christine  Ayala (formerly with Dallas Morning News) both join as reporters.
  • DC Inno: recent graduate Samantha Sabin joins as startups and venture capital reporter on Oct. 3.
  • FitSmallBusiness.com: Priyanka Prakash, former financial and legal editor, promotes to managing editor.
  • Newsweek: freelancer Paul Raeburn joins as senior editor to oversee new science, health and technology franchise.  
  • Politico Pro: Plans state-level healthcare coverage under executive editor Joanne Kenen. Former senior reporter for S&P Global Market Intelligence, Adam Cancryn joins as healthcare reporter. Ted Hesson also joins, in role as reporter on the labor and employment team.
  • CNN Digital: former managing editor of WSJ Magazine, Brekke Fletcher, joins as executive editor for travel.
  • Esquire: Matthew Marden joins as style director.
  • Times of London: James Dean promotes from technology correspondent to U.S. Business editor.
  • The Huffington Post: former executive editor of Elite Daily, Emily McCombs, joins as editorial director of the “Parents” section.
  • SF Weekly: freelancer Channing Joseph joins as editor-in-chief.
  • San Antonio Express-News: former general-assignment reporter at Dallas Morning News, Brittney Martin, joins as healthcare reporter.
  • Reuters: Mike Stone moves from mergers and acquisitions to aerospace/defense beat.
  • The Associated Press: digital director Delano Massey from WEWS-TV/Cleveland joins as Ohio news editor. Massey will replace Deb Martin who retires in October.
  • QualityHealth: Elizabeth Monaghan, editor, leaves.
  • WGRZ-TV/Buffalo, N.Y.: formerly with KOIN-TV/Portland, Kate Glover joins as news director.
  • Self.com: Executive digital director Carolyn Kylstra to oversee new redesign focusing on self-care and body positivity.
  • Boston Business Journal: life sciences editor Don Seiffert replaces Craig Douglas. Douglas will oversee data reporting for American City Business Journals.
  • Vice Media: former Popular Science online director Carl Franzen to replace Adrianne Jeffries as managing editor of Motherboard. Jefferies moves to upcoming tech site The Outline.
  • The Wall Street Journal: Sara Castellanos, former Boston Business Journal technology editor, joins as a “CIO Journal” reporter covering emerging technologies for chief information officers.
  • Univision: Raju Narisetti, formerly senior VP of strategy for News Corp. Joins as CEO of Gizmodo Media Group. Gizmodo is the new umbrella for websites previously owned by Gawker Media; which includes Gizmodo, Lifehacker, Jezebel, Jalopnick, Deadspin and Kotaku.
  • TorStar Corp: After closing Toronto Star’s printing plant in Vaughan in January the corporation is now selling the land and buildings for $54.3 million. TorStar has not disclosed their buyers.
  • Brunswick News/Toronto Star: Wendy Metcalfe leaves Toronto Star to be editor in chief of three New Brunswick papers.
  • CBC: former head of English language services at CBC, Kristine Stewart, joins as Chief Strategy Officer.
  • Rogers Media: Steve Maich promotes to senior VP of digital content and publishing. He will continue to oversee the company’s publishing operations.
  • CBC Aboriginal: renamed to “CBC Indigenous.”
  • IPolitics: Stephen Maher, formerly with Postmedia, joins as executive director.
  • CBC:  Senior Correspondent Terry Milewski retires.
  • Financial Post: former Toronto Star business reporter Sunny Freeman  joins as new resources reporter.
  • Global News: Shauna Rempel returned from maternity leave to resume as National Supervising Editor for Social Media for Global News/Crus radio. Simon Ostler promotes from supervising producer to managing editor of Global Toronto.
  • The Brandon Sun: Erin Debooy from Commodity News Service joins as reporter.
